Song Spotlight: Allison Crowe - "Creep" (Radiohead cover)

About a month ago, a live recording of Allison Crowe performing Radiohead's classic "Creep" was posted on her website (the link to the MP3 is about two thirds of the way down the page).  The recording is from the start of the millennium and features Allison on vocals and piano, Dave Baird on bass, and Kevin Clevette on drums.  Like many of her performances of nineties alternative songs, this one is very raw and powerful and well worth a listen if you are a fan of Allison, Radiohead, or even cover songs in general.  Much more information about this performance (and about the song itself) can be found on Allison's blog - make sure to read the comments too.

I realize that I haven't updated this blog lately as often as I normally do.  PhD research and a busier than normal month of commercially released music (i.e. new releases from Threat Signal, Megadeth, and Pearl Jam) have left me with little time to listen to and write about free music.  I do have some stuff in the pipeline, but I hope that this will tide you over in the meantime.  Happy listening!

Now this is getting scary! I was intending to feature Allison Crowe this week on Free Download Friday but given our recent synchronicity, I thought I'd check to see if you had already done her... which of course you had. However, it was back in 2007 so I wondered if I could still point people to some of her free downloads.

At the last minute, I decided not to go with Allison and went for The Answer instead. I think that was the right decision based on what you published today!

Haha, that's awesome! Thank you for reading my thoughts (or whatever made you change your mind at the last minute), because I didn't have anything else ready to be posted today. :)

On another note, you have a very cool looking label cloud on your site. May I ask where you got that from? My list of labels has become rather unwieldy, but the cloud seems to make much more economical use of the space available to it.

Hello Jeff

I cannot tell a lie... I just added the tag cloud because I saw your index and though, "I need to do something like that." :-)

The tag cloud is created by one of the gadgets that comes built into Blogger. Use the Customise link and in the Layout tab, click the Add a gadget link in what ever section you want to add the cloud. The Gadget is called Labels and is pretty close to the bottom of the list of gadgets. You don't get a lot of control over how the cloud looks but I went for quick and easy option provided by Blogger rather than spending time looking for a fancier third party solution. :-)

Just looked more closely at your site. It looks like you already use the Labels gadget - in which case you just have to choose the cloud option rather than list. The only other thing I did was edit the list to take out the one off labels that I thought I'd be unlikely to use again in the near future to keep the list a reasonable size.

Haha, I can't believe I never noticed the "Cloud" option before. I'm glad it was this simple to implement. Thanks!
