[Alas, this turned out to be too good to be true. I don't know when it happened, but the free download has been taken away.]
This comes as a total surprise to me, but Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" can currently be downloaded for free from last.fm. All of the free downloads that I've ever seen on last.fm have been approved by the artist, so I am assuming that that is the case here; however, another "song" called "Led Zeppelin is the worst band ever" (which is actually about half a minute of someone banging on a piano), which claims to be a Led Zeppelin song, also showed up today. I don't know if this means that last.fm has been hacked, or someone is playing a bizarre joke, or... well, I just don't know. All I do know is that one of the most iconic rock songs ever made can currently be downloaded for free from a site known for legitimate music downloads.
I may as well keep this post short, as I really don't know how long this song will remain available. If it isn't already in your collection and you haven't gotten your fill of it from listening to classic rock radio, go check it out. Happy listening!

My last Free Download Friday post (Free Download Friday #23: The Aurora Project) was from Last.fm but I missed the Zep download completely - silly me!
I wondered if Spotify was going to kill off last.fm but if this is the start of a series free downloads from major artists, perhaps there's hope for last.fm yet!
The only reason I found the "Stairway" download was because of the "worst band ever" download that showed up in my recommended downloads RSS feed. I went to the site to see what the heck was going on, and the "free download" link for "Stairway" immediately caught my eye.
I still don't know what was going on with that track. The MP3 has since been removed, but what I want to know is how it got up there in the first place? Has someone found a way around the system, or did someone from within the LZ organization upload it just to draw attention to the band's page, where the real free track could be found? This interests me tremendously, but I seem to be the only one - am I just reading too much into it? :p
If it was removed, it's back now. Curiouser and curiouser!
However, I think I can offer an explanation. If you listen to it backwards you can clearly hear Plant saying: "Let's drive Jeff crazy." over and over again. :-)
Ha! Well it's a good thing that my MP3 players only play in one direction - forwards.
