Free Christmas Music 2010

Like every year at this time, I am currently listening exclusively to Christmas music and posting about my favourite free releases at my other blog, Free Christmas Music.  Unlike any other year, I have made it my goal to make one new post there every day until Christmas.  A crazy goal, perhaps, but I've managed to keep it up for the first 9 days, and I think I've managed to streamline the process enough that I should be okay the rest of the way.  I'm hoping that I'll be able to carry those habits over to this blog in the new year and at least try to get a weekly post up.  In the meantime, please enjoy the Christmas music, as that's all I'll be offering for another month or so. :)

Some site maintenance news

This blog's site index has been horrendously out of date for a long time now; before today, it was last updated in May of 2008.  Most embarrassingly, it has constantly been one of the most visited pages on the site.  I'm happy to say that the index is now fully up to date, and I will be making a much better effort to keep it that way.

I also decided to take the list of "Most Popular Posts" that used to be at the end of the index, expand it, and give it its own page.  Most Popular Content currently lists the most popular posts (excluding things like the site index and other pages that don't have any original content on them) of all time and from the last month and week.

The next big thing I need to do is go through each post and make sure that the links a) still work, and b) still lead to free, downloadable content.  I already caught a few posts that linked to content that could no longer be downloaded while I was updating the index.  I flagged the links to these posts in the index, and I'll be adding notes to the actual posts shortly; the rest of the posts will be checked as soon as possible.  In the meantime, if you see any links that don't lead to where they should, please leave a comment in the post or send me a quick email to let me know, and I'll take care of it right away.  Thanks!

Totally Free Music Index

As this blog grows in size, finding the best music to suit your own taste may become difficult. I have tried to make it easy to access things by providing links to a custom search engine, an archive, and a list of all the labels I use in the right sidebar. I thought it also might be a good idea to include an index of everything that has been posted so far, broken down into a few broad categories. I will try to keep this index updated as new posts are added.

These are a few of the things that have been said about music by musicians. Music is definitely one of my favourite things in life. I listen to it while I work, play, drive, cook, relax, and do just about anything else; in fact, I have music to thank for being able to be a husbsand and a father, as I met my wife in an elective music class at university. So music means quite a lot to me.


Another thing that I (and, I would bet, the majority of people) enjoy is getting things for free. It's no secret that the Internet is full of free music; it's also no secret that a lot of that music is not legally available for free. But with some clever searching and a little bit of luck, it is possible to find lots of music that is both free and legally available. With this blog, I will be highlighting some of the best free, legally available music that I have found on the Internet. If you read it regularly, you will find music from a variety of genres in formats ranging from single tracks to complete albums; occasionally, there will be real treats such as entire artists' discographies and even CDs (I'm talking about actual, physical CDs, with packaging and artwork).


With Christmas just a week away, I think it might be most appropriate to highlight some free Christmas music. For that, please check out my other blog, Free Christmas Music, and also its companion website; between the two, you will find links to dozens of websites containing free, legally downloadable Christmas music. That blog is also a good indication of how I foresee this blog working: a couple of posts a week, each one highlighting an artist, album, or song with a brief review and a link to the source website.

For the time being, I hope you are enjoying the Christmas season, no matter what you celebrate this time of year. I'll be back soon with this blog's first featured item; I already have a lot of good candidates for that, and I am just trying to decide which one would be best.
